Autovelox
The installation of speed cameras is not the responsibility of the Concessionaire, but of the Traffic Police (Polizia Stradale). Speed limits are set, in agreement with the Granting Body (MIT), with reference to the altitude and planometric characteristics of the motorway route. They are established on the basis of the unobstructed sight distance, which is related to the visibility distance for stopping the vehicle, i.e. the minimum space required for a driver to safely stop the vehicle in case of a sudden obstacle.
Speed cameras, called autovelox in Italy, are announced by vertical signage by law indicating “controllo elettronico della velocità” (electronic speed check), placed within the distance prescribed by the Italian Highway Code.
The concessionaire has no knowledge of how and when the speed checks are scheduled at the fixed stations, unless, at the very moment they are activated, the Traffic Police deems it necessary to communicate this so that an additional warning is placed on the variable message signs.
